Forbes magazine named the Scruffy City fifth on its list of America's most affordable cities.

The magazine says a median family income of $60,000 can go further in Knoxville than most cities. Non-housing expenses like gas and groceries are also 11-percent below the national average.

Buffalo, New York came in at number one. Memphis came in at number two and beat Knoxville. Louisville and Birmingham were the other Southern cities that made the list.
