(WBIR) Pipes are back in place, but it's still a long road to fix the intersection of State and Main Streets, after a massive water main break Wednesday night.
The water main break happened at about 11:45 p.m. KUB reports. Several roads will be closed for the rest of the week, as crews pave and clean up the mess: Main Street from Gay Street to James White Parkway ramp; State Street near Cumberland Avenue to Dwight Kessel Garage. All garages are now open.
"Our crews will be out here 24-7 working. What you see here now is going to to continue into the evening, into the morning, and we expect the work to go through the weekend," said KUB spokesperson Andrea May.
The water main also significantly damaged the John H. Coleman building which sits directly below the road where the water main broke. Water rushed into the building, sweeping mud and trash into the business.
The BB&T building is also currently without full water service.
"It definitely affected the building here. People are leaving for the day already in the morning. We're trying to stay open as long as we can," said Ned Willard, who works for law firm Paine, Tarwater, and Bickers LLP.
KUB estimates it will be Monday when there's a fix and drivers could use the road again.
