Police say a gunman who earlier Friday held three hostages inside a drugstore in North Carolina following an attempted armed robbery has surrendered and is in custody, CBS News reported.

WFMY reports that when police arrived on scene, the gunman fired several shots at them. Officers then returned fire. At that time, officers became aware of hostages located in the store and called for backup.

The three employees who were held as hostages — now released — have no injuries.

Streets in the area were blocked off.

Belmont is about 15 miles west of Charlotte.
