Dozens of living Medal of Honor recipients are gathered in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania for the 2013 Medal of Honor Convention. Next year that convention will make its way to Knoxville.
Medal of Honor recipients make up the most exclusive group of American warriors. They are service members that have shown exceptional courage in immediate danger. Oftentimes, they have made the ultimate sacrifice.
President Lincoln created the Medal of Honor in 1861 to recognize the brave efforts of thousands of troops. 3,462 recipients have earned the Medal of Honor. Only one woman has received the honor.
10News' Service & Sacrifice special "The Highest Honor" details the history of the medal, what it takes to receive one, and why convention officials picked both Gettysburg and Knoxville to host.
The convention is in Gettysburg during an historic year. 2013 marks the 150th anniversary of the deadly Battle of Gettysburg and President Lincoln's famous Gettysburg Address.
The convention does not bring large numbers of people nor does it bring a lot of money. But, it is an honor for a city to host.
