All lanes are expected to fully reopen once all vehicles and debris has been removed from the scene.

An update from KPD also stated that several persons went to the hospital with minor injuries as a result of the crash. Initially, it said only one driver was hurt.

Previous story:
(WBIR - Knoxville) A crash involving two semis and two other vehicles disrupted westbound traffic Thursday morning on Interstate 40. KPD said around 5:15 a.m. Thursday officers responded to a four vehicle wreck on I-40 westbound between Midway Road and Strawberry Plains Pike.

Authorities said it appears the chain reaction crash began when the first car ran into the back of another vehicle. The vehicle that got hit spun out into the grass median while the first car remained on the road without its lights on.

KPD said the driver and passenger of the first car eventually fled the scene.

Next, authorities said a semi-truck carrying two trailers crashed into the now abandoned first vehicle and veered off onto the shoulder. Then, a second semi that was attempting to avoid the wreck ended up jacknifing and rolling over onto the shoulder.

KPD said the driver of the first semi-truck was the only person taken to UT Medical Center as a result of the crash. The driver had only minor injuries.
