A new initiative for ten hospitals across the state, including two in Knoxville, appears to be saving lives.
According to the American College of Surgeons, those hospitals cut surgical complications by almost 20 percent from 2009 to 2012, saving more than 500 lives.
UT Medical Center and Parkwest Medical Center both participated in the imitative.
Hospitals cut surgical site infections, pneumonia cases and urinary tract infections by one-third.
Now 21 total hospitals across the state are taking part in the imitative.
