A big donation is helping one East Tennessee school get a technology upgrade.

Horace Maynard Middle School in Maynardville cut the ribbon on its newly renovated library Saturday.

Donor Freddie Brasfield donated $50,000 to get new furniture, carpeting, and 30 new computers for the school.

"Young people who don't have the benefit of this type of technology are at a tremendous disadvantage when they try to go to college," said Brasfield. "We felt like it might be something that would impact the community down the road. Also, I think this is where Shirley would like to see her picture and her memory."

The new library is called the Shirley Collins Memorial Media Center. Collins was a long-time partner of Brasfield. She passed away last February.

Brasfield said he wanted to make the donation in her honor.
