A woman says the man, armed with a hammer, slid under the bathroom stall and tried to assault her.


(WBIR-Alcoa, Tn) Alcoa Police have charged a Maryville man who they say tried to rape a woman in an Alcoa store.

Stacy Elijah Smith, 18, is charged with attempted aggravated rape, and is being held in the Blount County Jail. Knoxville Police are also trying to determine if he is connected with other crimes.

On August 31, police say Smith attempted to assault

a 53-year old Tellico Plains woman while she was in the restroom of the Big Lots in Alcoa. She said the man slid under the stall door and tried to assault her while threatening her with a hammer. The woman kicked, screamed, and fought him off. The suspect then ran out of the store.

Operations Capt. Dale Boring of the Alcoa Police Department announced Tuesday that an 18-year-old Maryville man is being charged with, following an incident on Aug. 31, 2013 at Big Lots in Alcoa.

After the attack, the Alcoa Police Department released video of the man leaving the store, which led to a tip from the public and to Smith's arrest.
