Foothills Parkway is closed to traffic as part of the closure of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, but some road work continues in spite of the shutdown.

Work to complete the portion of the highway known as "the missing link" continues, despite the government shutdown. Park officials say the work is already funded, a contract is in place, and the work doesn't have to be supervised by park officials.

Plans to re-pave Newfound Gap Road in the Smokies also will continue. That road is not closed to traffic, but all rest areas, restrooms and visitors centers along the highway are shut down.
