(WBIR) A woman charged with child neglect is speaking out, after she took her 5-month old son to the hospital with bruises.
10News first reported about McKenna Verhulst, 22, on Friday. Her sister, Rachel Davis, 19, was arrested on charges of child abuse.
Verhulst said she left her infant in her sister's care for several weeks while she tried to get on her feet. She said felt unable to properly care for the child during that time because she just had surgery, started a new job, and was also caring for an older child.
"I felt that it was best, you know, she's blood," Verhulst said. "I should be able to trust her, but obviously that was the wrong decision."
The mother said she left her sister and her son with things the baby needed, like food and diapers. Verhulst said she checked in occasionally, but was often unable to see the child.
"I asked her multiple times to bring him back to me," she said. "And every time I asked her, its -- the truck's [broken] down, they have doctors appointments, something was going on where she couldn't bring him back to me."
She told police when she finally picked him up from her sister, she noticed bruising on the child and took him to an area hospital.
On Saturday, Verhulst told 10News it was a mistake to leave the baby there, but she feels only her sister should be charged.
"The only wrong choice I made was to leave him with her. I did not touch him, I did not neglect him. He had his food, he had his formula, he had his diapers. He had everything necessary that he needed to be taken care of," she said.
Both sisters are scheduled to be in court Tuesday.
