Once again, Blount County voters will be asked to increase their sales tax.

Blount County Commissioners voted Thursday to put a sales tax referendum before voters for the second time in two years. The measure would increase the sales tax from 9.25 to the maximum of 9.75.

Half of the extra money would go to education and the other half would go to the Blount County Debt Service Fund.

The proposal will go on the May primary election ballot.

Voters struck down a similar proposal in 2012. Residents in both Alcoa and Maryville recently voted to raise the sales tax within city limits.
