(Dec. 6, 2013) Pilot Flying J faces a one hundred thousand dollar fine in Maryland over alleged water pollution.

According to the Associated Press, the Maryland Department of the Environment fined the company over allegations of water pollution from leaky underground fuel tanks near Hagerstown.

Pilot Flying J officials say they disagree with the allegations and hope to reach a settlement.

The state agency says the problems at a Pilot travel center stem from leaky storage tanks that weren't installed properly back in 1999. The complaint lists 12 leaks and spills from 2008 to 2011 that officials say resulted in potential or actual water pollution.

State officials say Pilot failed to report 11 spills, including one involving about 30 gallons of diesel fuel.
