It turns out Tennessee played a pivotal role in one of America's most controversial elections.

According to the news magazine "The Economist", Al Gore would have won the presidency in 2000 over George W. Bush if he received the same sort of support that Barack Obama received in 2008 and 2012 from black voters.

The magazine notes that while Obama lost in a landslide in Tennessee, had the same number of people voted back in 2000, Gore would have won Tennessee and a place in the White House.
